18. Sun & Moon: Part II

🌞🏰🌚

“Hello, I am sorry to impose, but I would just kindly like to know why you are being so unpleasant. This is not your Castle! Do you have any reason for having taken over this Throne Room?” asked Aurinko.

The Jester did not reply. Instead, he squeezed at the bottom of the bag of spiders. The creatures spilled rapidly over onto the plasticky linoleum. The bugs ran in angry circles. Evidently, they had not been very fond of confinement. Anyone, even one not especially afraid of spiders, would have classified the sight of the crawling arachnids as absolutely nightmarish.

But there was no time to panic. Kuu thought momentarily about running back to the doorway to make his escape. But just as Kuu was about to turn onto his heels and to run back to the safety within the winding hallway, something spectacular happened.

Aurinko began to glow. At first, the evolution was not so notable that it seemed in any way unnatural. She looked as if she had had a very good day, or maybe that she had won a prise, received a gift or something else positive along those same lines.

In fact, Kuu and the Jester only noticed the change because it was clear that the spiders had begun to avoid Aurinko’s feet all together. It was as if there was a radiant, energetic elixir coursing through her pores, coating her in an untouchable protective layer.

The first waves of the energy had taken Aurinko by surprise, but it was not long before she too became aware of her metamorphosis. After she accepted it, her superpower became her nature. It felt easy, almost as though she were visiting somewhere familiar.

Accepting herself only made her glow more powerfully. Soon, Aurinko was surrounded by a halo of dull yellow that encompassed every part of her from the top of her head all the way down to her unpainted toes.

Simultaneously, Kuu began to grow angry and sad. His complexion turned venomous. Instead of giving off a glowing field of energy, his was more of a piercing and focal variety. It was no lesser than that of Aurinko’s, but it was different because it seemed to be in some way sickly.

As the glowing light originating from Aurinko grew stronger, Kuu was on the opposite wave. What I mean is that he repressed the energy created by Aurinko just enough to stop the power from running out over the edges of the room. The synergy created between the two was unmistakable. They were brother and sister, both powerful in a complementary way.

When the spiders came into contact with the cumulative yin and yang of both Aurinko and Kuu, they disintegrated into little tiny puffs of smoke that ballooned upwards and outwards from the level of the floor. The strange thing was that the spiders did not disintegrate in the expected pattern (closest ones first and the next furthest ones next and so on), but according to a different route that was much more confusing and rapid.

“Well done kids,” interjected the Jester.

“D, dddd Dad??” Aurinko asked nervously.

“Yes Aurinko and Kuu, I am your father. Oh, how I have missed you! You have matured to be such a wonderful woman in the time during which I have been gone,” he continued.

The more malicious of the two was the first to ask the serious questions.

“Hey, you’ve got no damn right coming back after all these years,” accused Kuu.

“My children, you are absolutely correct in being angry at me. The issue is that my leave was taken due to duty and not to choice,” said the father, “Besides, I have been getting lonely without having anybody to be with whom I can call family,” he continued.

“When I am lonely, I just gaze up at the moon. There is no reason to try to find your estranged children in these circumstances, so I wonder why you have done so,” asked Kuu.

“Yeah father, we need answers! Don’t think this is gonna get you out of trouble! Why did you leave us so suddenly and entirely?” asked Aurinko.
“Kids, the truth of the matter is that I had no intention of leaving but I was forced to do so. I am a man of black magic you see, and I had been called by the head sorcerer to come serve my duty. So it was not by choice that I went,” said the dad.

“Ok, if that is true, then you must be able to tell us for what kind of epic mission you got called in for,” inquired Aurinko.

“Well, firstly, it was important I go because this was a way to divert their attention away from your abilities,” he said.

“Whatever do you mean father?” asked Aurinko.

“Well, the issue is that although you have different mothers, your consciences are somehow interlinked. I knew this since you were born. As soon as you came out of the womb I could sense the string of attachment that secretly connects the both of you. Why else would I have convinced your mothers to name you Sun and Moon?” he said, “I tried my best to figure out why your consciences are connected as they exist today, but all that journeying made no difference. All it did was make me sad and tired,” he trailed off.

“Father, I still do not understand what difference it would make even if as you say, our consciences are interlinked?” asked Kuu.

“My child, the reason is because as soon as you learn to use your powers, you will become unstoppable. By keeping you here in the Cloud Castle, I protected you from being found out about by the evil Dark Lords that have captured so much of the universe. Although I work for them, I am secretly part of the Resistance. But I know for a fact that they keenly monitor each of their employees. By leaving, I drew their energies away from surveilling you,” said the father posing as a Jester, “Of course, that was all a ploy. I have now risked coming here dressed up in a secret disguise to get to you. The King is in on my plan as we are lifelong friends. He as you may say “owes” me quite a bit for some or other bits that I have done for him in the past. Hence, I have come here now as you are beginning to reach your fully-grown status. I have come to you now because I believe your powers have developed enough for you to begin your training,” he finished. After closing his mouth, he seemed to wheeze a bit as if he were out of air.

“But father, this is such a surprise! We never had any inkling of ourselves being such epic heroes. Now that I know this though, I for one would not be opposed to going and fighting against the Lords of Darkness,” replied Kuu, “In fact, I would very much like to be known as a hero as I believe the perks of gallantry would be quite substantial.”

“My children, please don’t get ahead of yourselves. Before you can fight you must first be trained in the Dark arts. The only way we can accomplish is by becoming a veritable students of the matter. I have already enrolled you in the school, so now all there is left to do is to come with me,” he said.

It was surprisingly easy for the children to intermingle with the rest of the populous of the School of Dark Arts. Just by drawing on some or other connections, their father had managed to get the teachers to believe Aurinko and Kuu to be authentic pupils. Their fellow students were not much more difficult to convince: their cover story was that they had come in as transfers from another School of Dark Arts in Siberia. This sounds quite outlandish, but apparently many of the kids training to be evil overlords believed it to be quite believable.

While at school both Aurinko and Kuu found their own ways to cope. Admittedly, Kuu coped better than Aurinko. At first, he became popular enough for people to start greeting him in the hallway. The next step was getting invited to parties. From there onwards, there was no stopping him.

Kuu and his mates would sit on top of the jungle gym in the playground and watch all the other groups of teens, whispering amongst themselves and bitching about the perceived wrongdoings of whoever dared to leave the school building. The sad thing and the thing that is true in most other circumstances is that Kuu and his friends were the cool ones. It is a well known fact that one of the easiest ways to become popular is to crush the opposition.

It was safe to say that Aurinko felt deserted. She went on with her studies in silence. It is such a sad thing that the opinions of others depend so critically on circumstances and pre-existing contexts that cannot be influenced by oneself alone. Thankfully, Aurinko was mature enough to understand this.

“One day, I’ll get out. I’ll get out and I’ll be great,” she said to herself.

Never-minding their discrepant social rankings, both Aurinko and Kuu spent the next two years at the school. Neither of them (not even Kuu) got into much trouble. The only notable progression that took place was that they grew unmistakably apart.

The night before their graduation, their father came knocking on each of their windows. This time, he was not dressed in any sort of Jester suit. He said the same thing to both children:

“My dear, your time will come tomorrow. Please be prepared. Come to the schoolyard at dawn and you will meet your destiny,” he said.

And they did prepare, but to different ends and with different effects.

The next morning, Aurinko and Kuu arrived promptly. They stood at the foothills of the jungle gym, expecting for something dramatic to come their way.

The Dark Lords did not take long to join them. They were dressed in long drapey capes as would be expected of such men. Overall, they were scary. There is no better and no other way to describe them.

The Dark Lords stood in a single row. They were packed so closely together that one could have accused them of not being aware of the concept of personal space. The tiny soldiers were separated from Aurinko and Kuu by the length of the playground.

At once, Aurinko and Kuu could feel the evil air intensifying.

The battle was about to begin.

The first to react was of course one of the Dark Lords. It was in fact the least powerful, the most immature, brash and annoying one of all. Even before the Dark Lords had arrived, everyone in the squad of them had known that it would be this guy to make the first move. His name does not really matter. For the purposes of this story it can be disregarded.

The attack from the side of the Dark Lords had begun as a trickle of forceful energy that had been aimed at Aurinko and Kuu. It moved forwards in tiny pulsating waves and seemed to be composed of many, many little creatures that were all drawn out into one long organism that lived and breathed the same stuff.

Aurinko stood in place concentrating. Kuu stood beside her. He too should have been concentrating. However, in the early morning sunshine, one could see that his eyes were peeled wide open. Just as Aurinko began expelling the energy radiating from her skin, he jerked out of position.

Aurinko soon realised that Kuu was about to switch sides. He was going to join the ranks of the parents of the children with whom he had learned to identify with while at the school.

Aurinko sensed what was happening.

“Kuu, remember when we played among the slivers of the clouds so long ago? Cmon, you gotta remember? Please, remember who you really are,” she pleaded.

It was then that Aurinko saw in his eyes the image of a moon arising, overlaid with a blood-red symbol of a broken heart.

Without another moment of hesitation, Kuu returned to his standing position besides his sister. By administering waves of energy at the same frequency and duration as in the past, Aurinko and Kuu defeated the Dark Lords. It was a funny thing, because the way in which they defeated the Dark Lords was the same tactic whereby the had managed to disintegrate the spiders in the throne room in the Cloud Castle.

So just like that, the Dark Lords were no more.

Now Aurinko and Kuu looked at each other. It would be hopeless to try to stay together.

The father watched over them with pride swelling up in his chest. Aurinko was the one to hug Kuu. Although reluctant, Kuu also went in for the embrace. They took a final look at each other and headed their separate ways.
