6.1. Savusauna

In all the years I’ve been alive, I’ve never been able to figure out whether the following instance really happened or not.

It was set in a sauna, more specifically in a ‘savusauna’. I think they only have those in Finland, but maybe also in some other Northern countries. The direct translation is to English is ‘smoke sauna’ but I doubt this means anything to you foreigners reading this (I might be wrong though and things have changed in this day and age with globalisation and such). But for those of you who don’t know, it’s basically like a normal sauna, except much darker and smokier because there’s no chimney. The only way the smoke can escape is through a little tiny hole in one of the walls.

So what I remember (or think I remember) from the savusauna is mostly the sensation of being held, all the while passing from an environment dominated by light to dark to light once more. Added to all this is the hustle and bustle of some or other unidentified characters.

It’s maybe one of my earliest memories.

But now knowing that we don’t start forming memories till about the age two, I consider it highly unlikely that I would truly remember such an experience.

The best case scenario may be that the savusauna etched into my memory is some sort of patchy recollection of my experiences in the womb.
